Make mine a scrumdiddlyumptious bar!!! Went to see the new Willy Wonka film last night (which is why there was no entry yesterday!). Extremely stylish, with some very funny bits. But what the hell was that hopelessly flat ending in the movie for?!?!? I couldn't believe how wrong they could go at sucha crucial time of the movie!! I can appreciate them wanting to do something different than the original, but this missed the mark by a mile. A real shame, as the rest of the movie was most enjoyable. I was dubious when I heard about the Oompah Loompahs, and how one guy would be playing them all, but it worked! And the sets were amazing, and the actors just right. But oh, that dreary ending!!! All in all, I'd probably mark it seven and a half out of ten. The original's still my favourite though, but then I grew up with that one and have been enjoying it regularly over the last twenty-five or so years -- so it was always going to be a tough one to top!!!
Spent most of Sunday putting the Shanville Monthly together. The Monthly usually takes the better part of a day to knock into shape. Even though I cut and paste most of the items from the News section of my message board - http://p090.ezboard.com/fdarrenshanmessageboardfrm9 - I like to re-edit and re-shape most of the entries, make sure all the links work, and add some new material.
Bas returned yesterday, which was nice. I haven't mentioned Bas on my blog yet!!! That's because she was away all of last week. She's my live-in lover -- well, just my girlfriend, really, but live-in lover sounds much more racy and exciting!!!!

jackie, what i mean by the music sounding the same is the background music. like if u have seen the new charlie and the chocolate factory, at the beggining they have the weird music and if u listen it sounds a bit like edward scissorhands. they use the same orchestra or what ever.
also johnny depp is in alot of his films -willie wonka, he's the voice in corpse bride, he's edward scissor hands and i THINK he appeared in one of the batmans films - i dunno.

to Carwyn Cussex who knows if youll ever read this:I share your love for Tim Burton and Danny Elfman. They rock so much!! Especially together! I love the nightmare before christmas. the best claymation movie EVER..that is maybe until corpse bribe comes out. Did you notice in the Corpse Bride trailer it was nightmare before christmas music? i guess they dont have the music ready for the new one yet. You can't forget to mention BEETLEJUICE beetlejuice beetlejuice! Danny Elfman did the desperate housewives theme too. and the music does NOT all sound the same! I was playing little snipits off his website the other day and I can totally tell the difference from your men in black music to your beetlejuice music to your batman music and so on. The oompa loompa music was so different though wow I've written a lot im just gonna stop here

has any one else seen any other time burtons films?
i have, i love them, the first one i saw was the nightmare before christmas, unfortunately i havnt seen any one else thats has seen that film.
he done so many like batman, bigfish, edward scissorhands and he also helped out in james and the giant peach.
his newest one coming out is corpse bride, if u've seen trailers for that then thats what the nightmare before christmas is like - stop motion frame animation.
if u have seen any other tim burton films then haev u realised that all the music sounds the same?
thast because a guy called danny elfman does his music in al his films - he also does the theme song and music for THE SIMPSONS!!!!

I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opening weekend here in the States. I loved it but of course I'm partial to all thing Tim Burton and all things Johnny Depp. I had the t shirt before the movie even came out. I was thrown by the ending because I'd heard it stayed closer to the book than the original so I really wasnt expecting that. I think they were just trying to make Willy Wonka more human and endearing. Johnny Depps performance was so different from Gene Wilders but I was expecting that. | |

this is my first comment on your blog. I think it's awesome that you're making a blog because it really shows that you care about your fans by communicating with them in such a personal way.
Anyways, I too saw the new willy wonka, and I thought it was good, but I think I still like the original just cuz I've grown up with it and it was one of my favorite movies when I was little.

I think your an awesome writer and I can't wait until I get my hands on the 10th cirque du freak book and the first book of your new series. I would LOVE to meet you on your tour, but sadly I didn't see any california dates, and for some reason my parents are opposed to bringing me to the next closest state... can't imagine why...

The new Willy Wonka had a bad ending I agree but also the parents of the children seemed not to care when somthing bad happened to there kid. I'm glad though that they didn't put in the part about the fizzy lifting drink in this new one. If they chonge the end and mabe combined parts of the old one and the new one together I think it would make the best Willy Wonka. Johnny Deep was weird in this one too.

The reason the new one was so different was because it was much closer to the book. When the original movie came out years ago the person who wrote the screenplay didn't read the book. He just wrote it from a vague outline he had. | |

The film is not released until next week where I am but I'm definitely going to see it because I LOVE the book.

I adore the older Charlie and the Choclolate factory thats why Im so reluctant to see the new one. I think that Johnny Depp looks terrible in the adverts and stuff Ive seen but no doubt I'll be dragged to see it sooner or later... thanks for the warning about the ending!!!

Live-in lover, it does have a fancy ring to it. I saw the new Willy Wonka, it made me laugh, I was surprised at the ending, as you were, but it's okay, Tim Burton(sp?) is known for his 'eccentric' charectors, and story plots in movies.

I am a huge fan of the film (and book) Charlie and the chocolate factory. I saw the first film very often, and I still love it. Next weak I am going to see the new one, and I am really exited about that. That you for preparing me a bit for the silly end. I will let you know what I think of it, when I have seen it.
