At last -- the moment so many of you have been waiting for!!! The movie trailer for Cirque Du Freak: The
Vampire's Assistant is now online, and I think it looks pretty
kewl!!!
I have also added an image of the first movie poster for The Vampire's Assistant
to my site, and will be adding more
posters and any other movie-related images that are released over the
coming months in various countries -- so keep checking back!!! You can
find the Movies
page in the Covers part of the Vampires section of the web site, by CLICKING HERE.
If you want to see a larger image of the poster, CLICK HERE. As you can see, in America the movie is rated
PG-13. Also, please note that this is what those in the industry call a TEASER poster, designed to whet people's
appetite. Another poster, with more images and info, should follow in due course.
In response to the big question -- YES, I do like the trailer!!! In fact I think it's top-notch!! As
I've been saying all along, the movie is going to be VERY different to
the books. For
instance, you can see, even from this short trailer, that it has more
humour in it than the books had. But at the same time it's recognisable
as the world
of the Cirque Du Freak which we all know from the books -- it has taken
many liberties with the story (more than are actually apparent in the
trailer), but
most of the main characters are there, the darkness is there, and the
freakiness is definitely there!!!
I know the differences will come as a shock to a lot of fans --
they certainly came as a shock to ME when I first read the script!! --
but we have to live with
the fact that the movie is its own beast. It's not a true adaptation of
the books, but a re-imagining of them. You can moan about what the
movie-makers
haven't done, in which case you're doomed to go away miserable -- or
you can treat it as a whole new story and give it a chance to win you
over on its
own terms. And I don stress the word "chance" -- the movie will have to
win ME over too!!! I haven't seen it yet, and as the author of the
original books, I'm probably going to be harder to please than anyone
else in the world!!!! But I'm prepared to accept it on its own terms
and to give
it a chance. When I sit down to watch the film, I'll be leaving all of
my memories of the books at the door and putting them far from my mind
-- and I
suggest that everyone else who has read them should do the same thing!!
You can never tell from a trailer what the final version of a film
will be like, but I think there's grounds to be hopeful based on what
we've seen
here -- it looks smart, it looks funny, it looks stylish, it looks
spooky, it looks freaky!! Roll on October!!!!!!

Darren Shan, before I begin, since this is my first message I have ever sent to you, I would like to say that your books are freaking amazing! I have every single one of your Cirque novels. I had to own them myself, they were just too good. Your series is the only series I voluntarily purchased. In fact, I love your books so much, I had dreamed of playing Darren in a movie some day myself, haha. I have some decent acting experience, I mean one can dream. With that, I just wanted to say that you are a genius of an author and to watch these Hollywood directors bring disgrace upon one of your legacies, has boiled up a lot of anger within me. I wanted them to hit your books dead on with the darkness and mystery. I just feel Mr. Crepsley isn't dark enough for the story. And I don't think we would feel sorry for Darren when he makes that sacrifice for Steve, if he's playing Super Mario in his coffin. Mr. Crepsley gambles with Darren's life when he fakes Darren's death in the books. But in the movie it's like he's in Neverland in that coffin. I just feel if they're gonna have a movie in honor of your name, it should TRULY honor your name. What makes us love your books is YOU. Nothing more and nothing less. For Hollywood to move away from what you intended to depict in your books, that spark that made u write 12 heart wrenching novels, is upsetting. Hollywood should continue YOUR spark of creativity, not start their own. It's good to be optimistic, but not if someone is destroying what YOU are all about. The reason why J.K. Rowling's movies are so good is because the movies stayed as close to HER books as possible. I honestly think you should change the direction of the movies back to your original direction. I may sound crazy, but I know deep down inside, it's the right thing to do. The movie comes out the day before my birthday, and hopefully my birthday wish comes true.

I don't like the trailer, though I am a big fans of the book.
As I remember, Steven doesn't tell Darren "He is a vampire" , right?
And I am disappointed that Darren is playing when he is in the coffin instead of lying painfully

I LOVED the trailer. I haven't read your books yet and I just started book 1 tonight. I'm sad to hear the book isn't as funny as the trailer because that's the one thing that hooked me.
I have laughed already from your book though, so that's a good sign. :)

I have to admit the movie looks COMPLETELY different from the books thats i love but i still though it was exiting to see all the characters in action (and i agree with Sarah evra should have been played by some one else) CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE TO COME OUT

Yeah I have to admit that at the start it seemed like a sad interpretation of the book in America. Then the cool Freaky Darkness came into it. Its almost like The Series Of Unfortunate Events movie. Very, very different from the books. But awesome in its own way. But of vourse your books are more "unputdownable". Also a bit of humour does no harm I suppose.

I'll be honest, i was dissapointed in the trailer, its just made the film into my worst nightmare! dont get me wrong I love the books, and i still read of of them. But this trailer has just completely turned the idea of the story upside down, the books we're always dark and sometimes a little freaky but this looks like its going to be a PG. And even though i love John C Reilly, lets be honest, he was roght for Mr. Crepsley, but i guess its only the teaser, and i'll have to wait to see the movie! Keep up the good writing dude!

I'm not too sure on the movie, but it's only the teaser trailer, so I guess I will have to wait until the movie comes out. It would've been nice if the movie was as dark as the books.
How many movies are they planning on making? Because there are a lot of books, they would squeeze everything in, right?
The movie poster looks pretty damn cool though. I love the tagline.

The trailer does look good and very different from the books, but since you have constantly said that the film will always be a different and seperate entity from the books, it looks fantastic, however I wish they'd choosen someone better looking to play Evra (I'm sure many Evra fans will agree with me)
